Body-Positive and Humorous Imagery and Their Impact on Collective Action

Fabio Fasoli (University of Surrey)

Body-positive and humorous parody imagery have been shown to increase women’s body satisfaction. However, existing literature has largely focused on body self-perception, without examining intentions for social change. For instance, little is known about how such imagery influences intentions to challenge the idealised portrayal of women on social media. Across two studies, we examined the role of emotions elicited by exposure to various types of imagery critiquing idealised body standards and their impact on online collective action.
